History

Met Links began as the Metacomet Golf Club in East Providence, Rhode Island, and moved it its current location in 1919.

The course in 1919 was designed by either the Club head professional, Leonard Byles, or by the golf course architect, Willie Park, Jr. A few years later, the club hired renowned golf course architect, Donald Ross, to redesign the golf course.

Ross made some adjustments to the routing, but his most significant contributions to the course were new greens and hazards. Nearly all of the greens and bunkers were rebuilt under Ross’s plans and it was this course that made Metacomet Golf Club (later renamed Metacomet Country Club) one of the best courses in the area.

Over the next century much of Ross’s design was lost. Many hazards were removed or simply grassed over, some of the greens were redesigned and rebuilt, and numerous trees grew and tightened the holes.

In 2020 Metacomet Country Club closed its doors, much of the golf course was lost, and the property was eventually sold. Marshall Properties, the new owner, was determined to salvage and restore much of the course’s semi-preserved front nine. Robert McNeil, ASGCA, and his team at the Northeast Golf Company, were brought on to conduct a restoration of the front nine with two new greens to be constructed.

Through this restoration, Met Links was born. Greens, hazards, and strategies created by Donald Ross were restored, and two new holes with new greens were created to flow with the character of the restored golf course. The result is a par-34 nine hole golf course that is sure to be one of the best nine hole courses in the Northeast and beyond.

Met Links has a storied and complicated history, but finally, Donald Ross’s vision of his front nine has been restored. Further, the course will be publicly accessible, so you can experience Mr. Ross’s genius on this wonderful East Providence gem!
